Angelfish, Beck, Bjork, Blondie, Bob Dylan, Bob Marley and the Wailers, Curve, David Bowie, Depeche Mode, Echo & The Bunnymen, Elastica, Elvis, Goodbye Mr. Mackenzie, Iggy Pop, Janis Joplin, Joan Jett, John Lennon, Johnny Cash, Joy Division, Led Zeppelin, Marianne Faithful, Mazzy Star, Miles Davis, New Order, Nine Inch Nails, Nirvana, No Doubt, Outkast, Patti Smith, Peaches, Pink Floyd, PJ Harvey, The Ramones, Siouxsie & The Banshees, The Smashing Punpkins, Sonic Youth, Talk Talk, The Beach Boys, The Beastie Boys, The Beatles, The Byrds, The Carpenters, The Clash, The Distillers, The Smiths, The Velvet Underground, The Who, Tori Amos, U2, Vic Chesnut и другие.

Butch's List of Music You Should Hear

Butch's List of Music You Should Hear

“In The Sun” ~ Come to Where I'm From by Joseph Arthur
A gorgeously haunting song about trying to let go of someone you love.

“Chicago” (acoustic version) ~ The Avalanche: Outtakes & Extras from the Illinois Album by Sufjan Stevens
Beautiful, poetic, a song about innocence and coming of age.

“Nobody's Fault But My Own” ~ Mutations by Beck
Take a look in the mirror.

“Sleep” ~ Thirteen Tales From Urban Bohemia The Dandy Warhols
Windshield wipers in the rain.

“Wonderwall” ~ Love Is Hell by Ryan Adams
More powerful and haunting than the original.

Puts a completely different spin on this classic song and makes you realize how timely the lyrics still are.

“Famous Blue Raincoat” ~ Essential Leonard Cohen by Leonard Cohen
The ultimate bummer song.

“Soul Meets Body” ~ Plans by Death Cab For Cutie
This song would fit on Rumors… I can hear Stevie Nicks singing it.

“Fortress” ~ Summer in Abaddon by Pinback
A momentary ray of sunshine breaks through the clouds. Let’s party.

“Walking with a Ghost” ~ So Jealous by Tegan and Sara
The sun is still out, might as well go for a walk and have a smoke.

“Old Man” ~ Harvest by Neil Young
Self reflection.

“The Drugs Don’t Work” ~ Urban Hymns by The Verve
A song about survival.

“This Perfect World” ~ This Perfect World by Freedy Johnston
Trying to reconcile the mistakes you’ve made in the past.

“Deadweight On Velveteen” ~ Veneer by Jose Gonzalez
Uncover the mystery.

“Into Temptation” ~ Temple of Low Men by Crowded House
A lush Beatle-esque take on facing your demons.

“Hurt” ~ American IV: The Man Comes Around by Johnny Cash
His voice resonates with an incredible amount of pain from life’s experiences.

“Both Sides Now” (from Dreamland) ~ Dreamland by Joni Mitchell
One of the best songs ever written about the passage of life.

“Walking After You” ~ The Colour and the Shape by Foo Fighters
Every Breath You Take Part 2.

“Thirteen” ~ New Moon by Elliot Smith
A beautiful rendering of the Big Star classic.

“Orange Sky” ~ Time Without Consequence by Alexi Murdoch
Positively upbeat, the clouds have finally disappeared!

Shirley Manson's Playlist

01. "My Body Is A Cage" (Arcade Fire): Everything they do moves me in some way or another. You can't ask for more than that from a band you love.

02. "Icky Thump" (The White Stripes): Jack is the closest thing we have to a bona fide rock star. Love him forever because he's a treasure and they don't come around that often.

03. "Knocked Up" (Kings of Leon): They are hot are they not? Red hot.

04. "Going To A Town" (Rufus Wainwright): This song is a masterpiece . . . literally.

05. "Phantom Limbs" (The Shins): It makes a dark girl feel all sunny.

06. "Diamond Sea" (Yeah Yeah Yeahs): Karen O is the queen to all thrones. Simple as that. She's effortlessly great.

07. "Don't Fail Me Now" (Ryan Adams & The Cardinals): I love the atmosphere in this track. It makes me think of old things and how much I miss them.

08. "Did You See The Words" (Animal Collective): I met a boy at a bar and he told me I would love this band and by golly he was right.

09. "Till The Sun Turns Black" (Ray LaMontagne): He's a mystery to me. I love his beard.

10. "Back To Black" (Amy Winehouse): I normally don't like deliberately retro sounding tracks but I love this song. Her lyrical bent and snarly attitude makes me root for her.

11. "B.M.F.A." (Martha Wainwright): The entire album is good but this song is genius. How I wish she was my best friend.

12. "Nan You're A Window Shopper" (Lily Allen): Why the silly record company made her take this off the album is beyond me. This is a true-blue original piece of great punk rock.

13. "Fuck It, I Love You" (Malcolm Middleton): Fuck it, I do.

14. "It Ain't No Crime" (Keren Ann): This song makes me want to go and do something nasty.

15. "It Serves You Right To Suffer" (John Lee Hooker): It's true. It does.

16. "Chicago (Acoustic Version)" (Sufjan Stevens): Butch Vig turned me onto this track. It makes both of us cry.

17. "Lord, Help The Poor And Needy" (Jesse Mae Hemphill): Amen. One day I hope he will.

18. "My First Song" (Jay-Z): I think Jay is going to fall out of love with Beyoncé and come crying to me on his knees. Oh yes he is.

19. "The Greatest" (Cat Power): It aches me to hear her sing and this song is her piece de resistance.

20. "The Gulag Orkestar" (Beirut): I love the mind that set to creating this peculiar piece music. It sounds like Abba on drugs.

Angelfish, Beck, Bjork, Blondie, Bob Dylan, Bob Marley and the Wailers, Curve, David Bowie, Depeche Mode, Echo & The Bunnymen, Elastica, Elvis, Goodbye Mr. Mackenzie, Iggy Pop, Janis Joplin, Joan Jett, John Lennon, Johnny Cash, Joy Division, Led Zeppelin, Marianne Faithful, Mazzy Star, Miles Davis, New Order, Nine Inch Nails, Nirvana, No Doubt, Outkast, Patti Smith, Peaches, Pink Floyd, PJ Harvey, The Ramones, Siouxsie & The Banshees, The Smashing Punpkins, Sonic Youth, Talk Talk, The Beach Boys, The Beastie Boys, The Beatles, The Byrds, The Carpenters, The Clash, The Distillers, The Smiths, The Velvet Underground, The Who, Tori Amos, U2, Vic Chesnut и другие.

Little bit off top:
Димон, спасибо за лист ширлиных предпочтений. Я переслал их главреду, он сказал, что пригодицца ))

По поводу Smiths: мне нравится голос Моррисси, да и язык у него подвешен как надо, но слушать одну и ту же песню на протяжении 50 минут - увольте.

12

Кстати, заметьте, что в плейлистах бутча и ширли есть общий трек:

“Chicago” (acoustic version) ~ The Avalanche: Outtakes & Extras from the Illinois Album by Sufjan Stevens
Beautiful, poetic, a song about innocence and coming of age.

16. "Chicago (Acoustic Version)" (Sufjan Stevens): Butch Vig turned me onto this track. It makes both of us cry.

Check Out Garbage Guitarist's Playlist

01. See My Friends - The Kinks
One of their more obscure early singles. An Indian-influenced guitar with evocative lyrics and a beautiful bridge.

02. Lightning Strikes - Lou Christie
A perfect pop gem. The lead guitar break had to have inspired Springsteen in his lead guitar on Born to Run.

03. Rain - The Beatles
Some of the best bass and drum playing they ever did. And Lennon’s vocal is wonderful.

04. Car Wheels on a Gravel Road - Lucinda Williams
I picked this because it is the title song from an album on which every song is superb.

05. I Still Miss Someone - Johnny Cash
Breaks your heart the way only Johnny could.

06. Evie’s Garden - Freedy Johnston
I was somewhat involved in the mix on the album ‘Perfect World’. This is only one great song from it.

07. Ella Guru - Captain Beefheart and the Magic Band
This song, from ‘Trout Mask Replica’, is an example of Beefheart at his most bizarre, funny and inventive.

08. Daydream Believer - The Monkees
Great, shallow, wonderful pop.

09. Hurt - Johnny Cash
Cash nails this Nine Inch Nails song with more force than they could muster, and with a much lighter hammer.

10. Here Comes the Rain Again - Eurythmics
Annie Lennox’s vocal on this is beautiful. The arrangement is genius.

11. Rosie Won’t You Please Come Home - The Kinks
This lovely song from ‘Face to Face’ is another of Ray Davies’ great overlooked works.

12. What’s New Pussycat? - Tom Jones
From the movie of the same name. Very weird.

13. Can’t Seem to Make You Mine - The Seeds
Garbage covered this song, and we did a respectable (and respectful) job of it. Doesn’t hold a candle to the original though.

14. Tomorrow Never Knows/Within You Without You - The Beatles (‘Love’ soundtrack album)
The ‘mash-ups’ on this record were interesting…some worked, some didn’t. This is one of the more successful combinings of two Beatles classics.

15. 7 and 7 Is - Love
It’s hard to believe that I first heard this very strange number on Top 40 Radio in the middle of Nebraska. It blew my little mind.

16. Positively 4th Street - Bob Dylan
This was the follow-up single to Like a Rolling Stone…a hard act to follow, but a worthy successor.

17. Respect - Aretha Franklin
It doesn’t get any better than this.

18. Hot Fun in the Summertime - Sly and Family Stone
One of the great ‘summer singles’.

19. Good Vibrations - Beach Boys
Brian Wilson’s self-described ‘mini-opera’. Imaginative, melodious, and, sometimes, it rocks.

- Duke Erikson
