10 Reasons Why We Love Garbage 03.05.2005
1. From the leftfield pop anthems 'Queer' through to 'Androgyny', Garbage has always had an eye on the steamy and fluid side of bisexuality. Flirting with the gays is one of our favourite hobbies you know.
2. Shirley Manson, queen bitch frontwoman and allround mouthy bird oozes star quality like most folk ooze grease. She hangs out with Gwen Stefani, knows Madonna, appreciates Kylie's fighting spirit and isn't afraid to diss J-Lo's music. Bring on the catfight!
3. With three producers all playing instruments in the band, the sound was always going to be heavy. Guitar maestro Butch Vig is the legendary producer of classics such as Nirvana's Nevermind and Smashing Pumpkins Siamese Dream.
4. As everyone knows, the best rock albums are born of conflict. During the recording of the latest album Bleed Like Me, the rows among the band members got so bad that they briefly split up. But they stuck it out for the sake of the music and have recorded their most unashamedly rock album to date.
5. Garbage has contributed two original classics to movie soundtracks. They recorded the seminal James Bond theme tune 'The World Is Not Enough' for Pierce Brosnan's 1999 smash hit movie. Moody, epic and yearning, it's a classic slice of romantic melancholy that sits nicely alongside their doomed ode to unrequited lust, '#1 Crush', from 1997's hyper-soap-opera Romeo + Juliet.
6. In the now defunct Select magazine, Shirley boasted about being a bit of a swinger. "Sure, I've been with girls...." she shrugged, while a nation of impressionable teens swooned. We're all for lezzie loving, and this was before Brookside became a national obsession!
7. The trademark Garbage sound is a unique hybrid of heavy grunge, industrial feedback and gorgeous harmonies sung in Shirley's rather sexy sugared growl. Their biggest strength are their choruses, which are catchier than crabs.
8. Shirley's early band Goodbye Mr Mackenzie consisted of soem not very good Scottish rockers blagging their way round the C List indie circuit. The guys - Butch Vig, Steve Marker & Duke Erikson - saw Shirley on MTV and recognised her potential. They invited her for a rehearsal - "I was nervous and not very good, but the guys believed in me" Shirley says, and the chemistry worked. Garbage was instantly huge.
9. The song 'Cherry Lips (Go Baby Go!)' is about troubled superstar writer JT LeRoy. His collection of short stories 'The Heart Is Deceitful Above All Things' chronicles his early life as an underage transvestite hooker. When Shirley read it, she was so moved she wrote the song in celebration of his damaged but courageous life.
10. Garbage's excellent new album Bleed Like Me is stuffed full of potential hits, huge guitars and their trademark angst, including the new single 'Why Do You Love Me'.
